A fast-growing Whangarei coastal community is poised to become a city if plans for a major commercial development go ahead. The plans include residential apartments and a university at Ruakaka.
North Holdings Ltd's plans for a mixture of commercial and residential development, just south of the proposed rail corridor, could create 4400 jobs.
Four overseas companies are planning to invest $100 million into a primary and secondary school as well as a university in Whangarei in the next two years. The new academy, expected to become fully operational by 2013, will complement a major long-term commercial development planned by North Holdings at Ruakaka. Ruakaka-based TR Developments is behind the venture in partnership with four companies - two in Asia, one in the United States and one in Germany - for a state-of-the-art "educational township".

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Stace Hopper last Friday. Stace had become part of our community and was a friend to many of us. HisThis friendship and maturity was well beyond his years. Stace’s ability to converse with members of our organization and the community held him in high regard. His enthusiasm for living life was infectious. He will be sorely missed and we will be poorer for his passing. Our sympathy will be passed on to his family.
