Chairman's Report: 20 May 2011

Ruakaka Economic Development Group (REDG) has in the last year achieved Incorporated Society status
and in turn has increased its membership to approximately 40 members.

The coming year will see a change in format which it is hoped will involve more small businesses having
involvement with REDG.

We have struggled to some degree fitting within the bounds of our Constitution and allowing people to have involvement without taking the focus away from the very reason we exist. While members of REDG put huge effort into promoting their business and what it has to offer, it is very much a long haul situation which needs all the support we can give.

Being an election year certainly doesn’t contain the same hype and promise that it used to.

Growth within our district continues at a very slow pace, but there are always signs of activity which shows that some areas are continuing to make headway in what has been an extremely trying year. The fact that Northport is probably the busiest it has ever been, reminds us that it is still a progressive area that will in time increase the pace of industrial and commercial growth.

The planning, consenting and general red tape that has to be dealt with is also a major stalling factor in the many plans and hopes which abound in this district. The very fact that a group like REDG can meet and discuss issues in various forums is, I’m sure, some consolation for those who must at times feel like throwing their hands in the air and walking away in disgust.

It is however, very rewarding to note that many of the presentations and discussions we have had this year, while still behind the scenes, are very much on track and will undoubtedly show some positive moves in the very near future.

This year’s Draft Annual Plans from WDC and NRC have both received submissions from REDG, they were agreed to in principle. However, the fact that this area rates barely a mention means discussions need to continue in earnest on even small projects which have continued for what is turning into an eternity.

It is just as frustrating for our Councillors whose continued support for this district is greatly appreciated. They also have to battle the same ole red tape and need our support every bit as much as we need theirs.

My thanks again to all our members for their continued support. To our Councillors and associated local bodies. To Jon Moore and Northport for the use of their facilities throughout the year. We are also heavily indebted to Tracy for her continued work as Secretary and Treasurer which has been a huge task for her and one which she seems to just take in her stride, which not only shows her ability but also her enduring sense of humour, thanks Tracy.
